“I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you. I love you not only for what you have made of yourself, but for what you are making of me. I love you for the part of me that you bring out.”

Game Night

Not the best picture but I'm going to want to remember it. (Jamie, Tim, Catie & Nate, Lauren & Mike and Gretchen.  Peter was also there but for some reason not in the picture.) Matt was sweet enough to humor me while I had my childhood friends over for some games and to hang out.  Don't get me wrong, he loves my friends and we had so much fun playing games but I threw it on him last second and invited everyone over. I love that we can all still get together and hang out as if nothing has changed.  It's too bad we are all spread out but at least we have holidays to bring us back to our home ward from when we were kids.

Lots of Snow

We have loved all of our family time and since Matt is in school it is extra awesome because we get a super long break and added time together.  To make things even better, we have been getting a ton of snow.  This is how I remember winters as a child. We would get several inches at a time and after the streets were plowed, there would be huge piles to play in.  I spent the morning snow blowing our street and when I was done Matt took the kids outside for a couple hours to play.  I came out to take a few pictures and Tanner said, "Mommy, Cold. Snow. Hurt."  It was too cute but the poor little guy was frozen and soon came in to play with me and Abby and make the others hot chocolate.

I Scream, You Scream: Shumways Love Their Ice-Cream

The kids had fun testing out our new ice-cream maker and the first flavor we made was rich and creamy chocolate.  It was quite delicious and only got better the next day when we used it to make Oreo milkshakes.

Miller Christmas Party

We went to the annual white elephant party for the Miller's side of the family.  It was a lot of fun catching up with Matt's aunts and uncles.  The kids had a great time running around and playing with their new toys too plus they got to spend even more time with Nana and Papa.

When we got home I put Abby in Tanner's sweater and she looked so stinking cute so I kept her in it for bedtime.  She's too sweet.

Christmas: Sneak Peek

Many of my pictures from Christmas are on my "old" camera but here are some of my favorites taken on our new camera.

Sadie got her makeup kit that she asked for from Santa and carried it around all day.  This picture makes me smile because it shows how happy the girls were with their surprises.  Sadie put makeup on many of us many times.

Mommy getting a makeover.

Sienna got a jewelry box that she got to decorate herself and she loved it just as much as Sadie with her makeup (pictures are on the other camera). The girls got a jewelry kit to share and Sienna is sporting a necklace that she made.

Tanner and Crewbear playing with some of their new toys together. I love that when Crew got to Nana's house both Tanner and Adam were so excited and called him "Crewbear" and not just Crew.

Cousins watching a show.

Abby helping daddy do a puzzle. Matt has taken this Beard Break pretty seriously and has yet to shave. I love it. Much better than the No-Shave November when all the guys had nasty 'staches.

Tanner Turned Two!

Tanner's Birthday
Tanner woke up and had his favorite cereal, Lucky Charms.
Tanner got dressed up as Spiderman and spent the morning chasing his sisters around and playing with balloons.
We went bowling with Nana & Papa, Adri & Adam, Dana & Trent and of course our little family.
We went to Wingers for dinner with Grandma Anne and Grandpa Doug. Tanner got his own bowl of popcorn.
Tanner was spoiled by everyone.

I cannot believe my little buddy is two years old. He is such a fun, smart and handsome boy that makes us all so very happy every day.  His vocabulary continues to grow and his conversation skills are amazing.  The other night he came up stairs and stomped his foot at Matt shouting, "Dad, You didn't me KISS!"  He was very much not okay that he was put to bed without a kiss from daddy which I'm sure he got in the first place anyway but there is always time for more hugs and kisses.  I love when he says, "Mommy, you lay with me" or "HUGS!" as I'm walking out of his room.  Tanner is such a little BIG tease.  He is always playing tricks on us and chasing us around.  He is also the sweetest little guy around and gives more loves than most.  He often has to give loves for not sharing but before we can lecture him or make him say sorry he is already holding onto his sisters and giving them kisses and saying sorry.  I could go on forever about the smiles Tanner puts on my face, he is so wonderful.  Happy Birthday, Tanman! We love you so much.

No School Means Extra Play

Kyla and Kash got to come play with Sadie and Tanner this morning.  By the time I said goodbye to Sharee and she got in her car, the girls were already dressed up and ready to go.  They don't waste time.

In Memory of Emilie Parker and the Other Victims of Sandy Hook

Emilie Parker

Two days ago the news shared the most horrific and saddening story I have ever heard.  There was a school shooting in Connecticut killing 20 elementary school children ages 6-7 and six other adults.  Reni had first informed me about the story when I went to pick Sienna up from school (which I usually don't do anymore because she loves riding the bus.)  It hit home so hard because this was a first grade class that was attacked.  Only one grade above Sienna and Max sitting helplessly in their room when the intruder came in.  I will not focus on the monster or the details of what happened but I just want to relate a little bit of why it was extra difficult for me to handle.  I have cried on and off since reading and hearing about this tragedy and have pictured many times in my head the fear that would be on Sienna's face as she clung to her cousin and best friend, Max.  The thought of losing any of my children and especially in such a way makes me physically ill.  I wanted to throw up more than once.  I felt helpless but all I wanted to do was help.

A week prior to this tragedy I got a phone call from Sienna's school telling me that she was not there.  I had an instant feeling of desperation and despair because I had put her on the bus myself.  I told myself not to panic and that the system must have called me by mistake.  I instantly called the school asking about my sweet girl and they informed me that a bus was late and that was probably why I had received the call.  I made them go into her classroom and tell me she was there which thankfully she was.  Her teacher called me back immediately asking if I had just called the school inquiring about Sienna and then apologized for the scare.  She had been marked absent because the bus was late and then her class was in the computer lab and her teacher was unable to change her status to being in attendance before the automated system called me.  This all happened in a matter of seconds, two minutes tops but it was long enough to make me hurt, scared and ill.  I was so grateful to know that my baby was okay and that there was no reason to fear.  I spent the rest of the morning looking forward to getting her off of the bus and telling her how much I love her.

I believe this little experience that could have meant nothing once finding out that Sienna was okay helped prepare me to have even more empathy for these parents that just lost their babies.  My biggest fear just became so many's reality.

As the story broke, I found myself glued to the television wanting more information.  I didn't want to know the details of how it happened but I wanted to hear about the families.  That afternoon I was on the computer and say one of our dear friends in Texas post that his niece was one of the victims and did not make it out alive.  That made me sink to a new low.  Not only was this massacre the most horrible thing I have witnessed or heard of but now I knew someone directly affected by it.  Their niece was killed in her classroom.

It has only been two days but it has felt like weeks of pain and hurting for these families.  So much wondering what can I do to help?!  I want to write my overall feelings about this situation.  I find it offensive, horrifying and beyond understandable.  It has caused so much hurt and pain BUT at the same time it has also strengthened my testimony so much.  It has made me want to be a better mom. Never taking a moment with my family for granted or leaving my kids to go to a friend's house or to school without informing them how much I love them and how proud of them I am.  It has strengthened my relationship and faith in God and our Savior, Jesus Christ.  I know more than ever that He is our Savior because without him, we would have no feelings of comfort or love but that is what I am consumed with.  I just got off the phone with my friend Jeremie that is this beautiful girl's uncle and I was amazed at the strength of him and his family.  Emilie's father has made a public statement where he expressed both forgiveness and faith.  I am amazed and humbled.  I am so grateful for their strength and example and their faith in our Heavenly Father's plan.  I will continue to pray for all of the victims families and friends as well as the shooter's.  This experience has changed the lives of so many including mine and I am determined to have it change our lives for the better so that these beautiful children and amazing heroes didn't die in vain.

Here is a poem that I saw online and I loved it so much.

twas' 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38
when 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven's gate.
their smiles were contagious, their laughter filled the air.
they could hardly believe all
the beauty they saw there.
they were filled with such joy, they didn't know what to say.
they remembered nothing of what had happened earlier that day.
"where are we?" asked a little girl, as quiet as a mouse.
"this is heaven." declared a small boy. "we're spending Christmas at God's house."
when what to their wondering eyes did appear,
but Jesus, their savior, the children gathered near.
He looked at them and smiled, and they smiled just the same.
then He opened His arms and He called them by name.
and in that moment was joy, that only heaven can bring
those children all flew into the arms of their King
and as they lingered in the warmth of His embrace,
one small girl turned and looked at Jesus' face.
and as if He could read all the questions she had
He gently whispered to her, "I'll take care of mom and dad."
then He looked down on earth, the world far below
He saw all of the hurt, the sorrow, and woe
then He closed His eyes and He outstretched His hand,
"Let My power and presence re-enter this land!"
"may this country be delivered from the hands of fools"
"I'm taking back my nation. I'm taking back my schools!"
then He and the children stood up without a sound.
"come now my children, let me show you around."
excitement filled the space, some skipped and some ran.
all displaying enthusiasm that only a small child can.
and i heard Him proclaim as He walked out of sight,
"in the midst of this darkness, I AM STILL THE LIGHT."

Hold My Hand

"Hold my hand, Sadie!"  These two ran laps around the kitchen before all of the cousins came over for dinner tonight.

Tanner & Santa

If you ask Tanner what he wants for Christmas he says, "TREATS" which isn't hard to believe because anytime you find Tanner day or night he has a sucker in his mouth.  He sneaks into the candy drawer multiple times a day to sneak his candies. We ask him if he wants presents too and he says no most of the time. I love these candid photos of him being silly on the steps with Santa and Shelby.
